Radon Testing

Radon Testing to Keep Northern Colorado Residents Safe

Radon gas is a cancer-causing radioactive gas that can’t be smelled, tasted, or seen. It’s called a silent killer because it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, responsible for over 20,000 deaths each year. Created from the natural radioactive breakdown of uranium in the soil, rocks, and water found near your home, radon usually enters your home through cracks in your pipes, foundation, floors, and walls. Because radon builds up inside Northern Colorado homes at a higher rate than many other areas of the country, radon testing is recommended to ensure your family’s safety. If you don’t know the level of radon gas inside your Fort Collins, Loveland or Windsor-area home, Foothills Home Inspections can provide radon testing for your protection and peace of mind.

Radon Levels Fluctuate Often – Have Your Home Retested

Radon levels fluctuate often, and you can’t predict them based on your state or neighborhood. You should have your home retested every two years. If the radon level in your home is 4pCi/L (picoCuries per liter) or higher, you’ll need to seek a certified radon mitigation contractor to perform diagnostic evaluation and take the necessary steps to reduce your radon to more acceptable levels. If your radon level falls between 2pCi/L and 4pCi/L, you should consider radon mitigation, as there is no safe level of radon. Foothills Home Inspections provides radon testing seven days a week.

Fixing a Home With High Radon Levels Is Easier Than It Sounds

If your radon test reveals your home has high radon levels, there are ways to fix this inexpensively. A radon mitigation contractor will usually seal the cracks where radon enters your home and install an active soil depressurization (ASD) system. Using a radon fan, an ASD system changes the air pressure beneath your home and draws out the radon gas. It is then safely vented above your roofline. Make sure they retest your radon levels afterward or call Foothills Home Inspections to come back for follow-up testing for the best results. What is Radon?

Radon gas is a colorless, odorless, radioactive soil gas that occurs naturally in the environment. It can be found in water and soil. Most radon gas is produced by the decay of uranium, which is found in rocks and soil. It can enter your home through cracks in the foundation or crawl space or seeping up from the ground.

As per the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Colorados radon acceptable level is 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Above this level, Colorado residents are required to take action to make their homes habitable again.

Why Radon is dangerous?

Exposure to Radon can cause lung cancer over time and other health problems like heart disease or lung disease. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the second leading cause among smokers. The worst thing about radon exposure is that it’s not immediate: it takes long-term radon exposure for lung cancer to develop after someone has been exposed to high levels of radon gas in their home or workplace environment. That means that people won’t necessarily notice symptoms until it’s too late!

Radon Testing in Colorado

Test for Radon can be done with a do-it-yourself kit or professionally by a qualified inspector. The test results will help you determine whether you need to take action such as radon mitigation to reduce your exposure to radon gas in your home.

There are several different ways to test for radon in your home, but the most common is using a radon detector that you place under-floorboards of your home for at least two weeks. Radon detectors can be purchased at many hardware stores. Still, it’s best to hire an expert who knows how to install them correctly so they don’t get damaged during installation or removal from the house when testing has been completed. Professional home inspectors will conduct radon inspection and can also install radon mitigation systems to reduce the level of radon in your property.
